Read this interview with R ichard Bolles for some career inspiration.

Read an article from LSA Newswire with my advice on job searching.

It’s  great to have a dream job. It’s even better to apply for it,  nail the interview, and want it desperately.  It’s not so great to count your chickens before they are hatched. So sit tight and avoid walking on eggshells. Waiting is the hardest part of the job hunt.  My strategy to cope with the wait is to anticipate your next move.  Create plans B, C, D, and even E!  Apply for jobs, follow up with contacts, network, write a blog, volunteer, etc.  God willing, you will get the dream job; but if you don’t, you’ll know what your next step is, and you won’t have a mess on your hands–er, feet– in the interim.

Work for free when I’m unemployed?

Yes, that’s what I tell my clients when they question my suggestion to get busy volunteering their extra time. Volunteering in a professional environment can provide an opportunity to gain skills, confidence, and contacts while you are in job transition. Let’s say you want to transition into non-profit work but never had time to volunteer at your local shelter, use your free time to find a cause you support and give time. Volunteering doesn’t mean making lunches either. You can assist with event planning, volunteer recruitment, or database management. Volunteer strategically. Give time but make sure you are also gaining or honing skills you need for your career advancement. Think about how you could gain exposure to a new industry or environment. Considering going back to school for a medical career- volunteering in a health care facility might give you better clarity as you make a career change. So… where are you volunteering?
